Who we are

Still Dark is made by Alan Mrvica, an individual developer based in the United States ("we", "us"). You can reach us at support@stilldark.app for help with the app, and at hello@stilldark.app for anything else.

By using the app or this website you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

The app licence

You get the app from Apple, so Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies to it. These terms add to that agreement. If the two disagree about the licence to use the app, Apple's agreement wins.

Some content in the app is shared under open licences, such as Creative Commons photos of deep-sky objects and constellation artwork. Each item is credited in the app with its licence. Nothing in these terms limits what those licences allow you to do.

Free and Pro

The free version covers today, for any place you choose, with up to two saved plans. Still Dark Pro adds any other date, favorite and recent places, unlimited saved plans, camera tools, reordering home cards, details for faint stars in the catalogue, and live weather forecasts.

You can get Pro in three ways:

• Pro subscription, monthly or yearly. It includes live forecasts. The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
• Lifetime, a one-time purchase. It includes every Pro feature except live forecasts.
• Weather Pass, a monthly or yearly subscription for Lifetime owners only. It adds live forecasts to Lifetime.

Prices are shown in the app before you buy. They can differ by country and may change. If the price of a subscription you already have goes up, Apple tells you first and, where required, asks you to agree.

Billing, renewal and cancelling

Apple handles every purchase and charges your Apple Account. We never see your payment details.

• Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends.
• Your account is charged for the next period within 24 hours before the current one ends.
• If you're on the free trial, you're charged when it ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. If you buy a subscription during a trial, any unused part of the trial ends.
• You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account settings, under Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
• Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Purchases work on every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in with the same Apple Account. Use Restore Purchases in Settings on a new device. Purchases can also be shared with your Family Sharing group.

Refunds

Apple handles refunds. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves, because we never receive your payment details.

Accuracy

Still Dark calculates the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, stars and satellites from published models and catalogues. The results are accurate enough for planning photographs and observing, but they can differ slightly from other sources. Satellite passes are less reliable more than a couple of days ahead. Weather forecasts come from Apple Weather or Open-Meteo, and forecasts can be wrong.

Use Still Dark for planning. Don't rely on it where an error could cause harm, such as navigation or safety decisions.

Your safety

• Never look at the Sun, with your eyes, binoculars, a telescope or a camera viewfinder, without a certified solar filter. This includes every partial phase of a solar eclipse.
• Night photography often means being outdoors in the dark, in the cold, or far from help. Plan for it, tell someone where you're going, and follow local laws, park rules and private property signs.
• Don't use the app while driving.

Your plans and settings

Your saved plans and settings belong to you. They are stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud account. See the privacy policy for details.

This website

The guides on this website are general information about photography and astronomy. Dates and times in them were checked when written, but sky events, forecasts and local conditions change, so check them for your own place before you go.

You're welcome to link to any page. Please don't copy whole guides to another site. The photographs in the guides belong to the photographers and institutions credited beside them and are used under the licences shown on the photo credits page.

What we can't promise

We work to keep Still Dark accurate and running, but we provide the app and this website "as is", without warranties beyond those the law requires. We may change or remove features, and outside services such as weather or satellite data can be unavailable at times.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as a missed photograph, a wasted trip or lost data, arising from your use of the app or this website. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can't be limited by agreement.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States of America and of the state where Alan Mrvica lives, without regard to rules that would apply another place's law. If you live outside the United States, you keep any protections that the consumer laws of your country give you and that can't be removed by agreement.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change is significant, we'll say so in the app or on this page. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the new terms.
